When you're sick, the last thing you feel like doing is brushing your teeth; however, keeping up your oral health is an important part of getting back on the path to wellness. Here are some other helpful tips to get you through your sickness faster, while also protecting your oral health.
Drinking fluids is vital when you're sick to hydrate your body, and they also help to keep your mouth hydrated, so you don't suffer from the dry mouth that is sometimes caused by certain medications or cough drops.
Your best bet is to choose water when you're sick, or tea if you feel like you want a warm beverage. Avoid sugary drinks that can contribute to tooth decay.
Choose Sugar-Free Cough Drops
Cough drops can help relieve a sore throat or cold; however, many cough drops have sugar, which makes it similar to sucking on candy all day long. Be sure to choose cough drops that are sugar-free so you don't have to worry about promoting cavities while you're sick.
Maintain Your Oral Hygiene
Be sure to keep brushing your teeth at least twice a day while you're sick, even if you don't feel like it. Brushing helps to remove the bacteria that builds up in your mouth that could be contributing to your illness.
You can replace your toothbrush or brush head when you start to feel well again so you don't prolong your sickness.
If you encounter the stomach flu, you may also have to deal with vomiting. You may feel like you want to brush your teeth right away after you throw up, but believe it or not, you should actually avoid brushing right away. Swishing with mouth rinse or water is your best bet, and then you can brush 30 minutes later to avoid spreading the acids from your stomach around your teeth.
