Why do I need a crown instead of a filling?
When we recommend treatment, we take a number of factors into account. We want to find a way to preserve the health of your teeth and prevent tooth loss, whenever possible. If you have deep decay, a cracked tooth, a root canal, or a worn down tooth, your treatment recommendation depends on a number of factors such as the location of your tooth, how much force it absorbs from chewing, and how much healthy tooth structure remains.
In some cases, a filling may do the trick. For small amounts of decay or for a small chip in your tooth, composite material can seal off the area and keep bacteria from entering. In other cases, we may recommend a porcelain dental crown in order to provide greater stability for your tooth. A crown fits over your tooth and absorbs force exerted from chewing. A crown can keep your tooth from breaking or splitting.
When we recommend treatment, we are happy to outline all of your options. We will always recommend the treatment that best supports your dental health. If you have questions about treatment that we recommend, please let us know. We can show you why we suggest one treatment over another understanding that the final decision is always up to you.
